Athing Mu and Brandon Miller recently announced that they would be taking their talents to Los Angeles to be coached by the legendary Bobby Kersee.
Kersee has coached some of the best talent in the sport, most notably Allyson Felix, Jackie Joyner-Kersee and now, Sydney McLaughlin. All of the aforementioned athletes achieved great success under Kersee, and Mu and Miller are hoping for the same.
Mu is coming off of a fantastic season that included winning the USATF Outdoor Championships in the 800m, and winning the gold medal at the World Championships in the event. Miller had a fantastic season at Texas A&M. The talented runner finished third at the NCAA Championship meet, while also finishing third at the USATF Outdoor Championships, which secured his spot on the World Championship team.
Miller is hoping to lead the charge after a disappointing World Championships performance from the USA men’s 800m team that competed this past summer. In the case of Mu, Anderson Emerole of Track and Field Black History and The Final Leg believes that the move to Kersee could mean that Mu is serious about the 400m.
“It’s interesting because it shows that maybe she’s going to be taking this 400 seriously,” he said. “Maybe she’ll be doing this double more seriously, who knows. And then of course, those dynamics. I mean, (Sydney McLaughlin) said she’s going to be at least dipping into the 400, targeting some fast times there. So the dynamics of them training together, that’s like a dream. That’s like the dream, you want to see them together.”
