Two of the best hurdlers in the world will face each other in an early-season matchup in Boston.

On Wednesday, World Athletics announced that Grant Holloway and Trey Cunningham would headline the field in the men’s 60m hurdles race that will take place at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix on February 4.

Holloway is coming off of a successful 2022 campaign that included winning the world championship in the 110 hurdles in Oregon this past summer. This was his second consecutive world title, with his first win being in 2019 at the World Championships in Doha.

Holloway also holds the second fastest time ever recorded in the 110 hurdles with his personal best time of 12.81. Only Aries Merritt, who holds the world record, has run faster in the event (12.80).

Trey Cunningham dominated the college scene last year for Florida State. He ran a new personal best of 13.00 in the 110 hurdles at the NCAA Track and Field National Championship, which was the second fastest time in collegiate history. He took home the national title in the event, and finished as the runner up at the USATF Outdoor Championships, while also earning a silver medal at the World Championships in Oregon behind Holloway.

Cunningham and Holloway squared off against each other at the NBIGP last season in the 60m hurdles. Holloway edged out Cunningham in the race, running 7.37 to Cunningham’s 7.47.

I’m a sports journalist based in Florida and I’ve covered a couple of different sports so far early on in my career, but I love the sport of track and field and the art of running. Everyone has a story and everyone has a story worth telling. My prayer is that the stories of the great athletes of this sport are told, and that the sport grows to new creative heights, so that the sport gets the respect it deserves.
