Yared Nuguse just ran his way into the record book earlier on Friday with his remarkable performance in the 3000m.
The talented distance runner won the 3000m race at the Terrier Classic with his time of 7:28.24, breaking the previous American record that was previously held by Galen Rupp (7:30.16)
“The key was just more to like enjoy, have fun, get some good racing in before you go to Millrose,” he said after the race. “It was like, you could run low 7:30’s if you decide to go for it. And so I didn’t come in thinking that I’m going to get the record, it just kind of happened.”
Nuguse, who now runs for the On Athletics Club, set the NCAA record in the indoor 3000m while running for Notre Dame with his 7:38.13 performance at the BU Valentine Invitational – which is the same track that he broke the American record in the event on.
His NCAA record that he set last year was broken by Drew Bosely of NAU on Friday, who finished fourth in the race.
Nuguse’s time is the 9th fastest time recorded in the indoor event.
