The outdoor season is in its early stages, but that isn’t preventing some of the world’s best athletes from achieving some remarkable accomplishments on the track and in the field events as well.
The latest elite performance came from Brooke Andersen, who won the world championship in the women’s hammer throw last year at the World Championships in Oregon. Andersen competed at the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville, winning the women’s hammer throw with her mark of 79.80m.
This mark puts her third all-time on the women’s hammer throw list. This was also her first meet of the season.
Andersen used two big throws in the fourth and the fifth rounds to fend off Camryn Rodgers and Janee’ Kassanavoid at the World Championships last summer to win the gold medal in the hammer throw. It was her first major championship win of her young career. Rodgers and Kassanavoid took home the silver and bronze medals, respectively.
Prior to winning the gold in Eugene, she won the USATF Outdoor National Championships. She also was a member of the Tokyo Olympic Team in 2021, where she secured a top 10 finish at her first Olympic Games.
