Sinclaire Johnson just missed coming in third place last weekend at the USATF Outdoor Championships. But she will still represent Team USA in the 1500m in Budapest next month.
Athing Mu, who finished second in the women’s 1500m at the USATF Outdoor Championships, also has a bye for the World Championships in Budapest in the women’s 800m. She’s decided to concentrate on the 800m at the world championships instead of attempting the 800/1500m double, which means that Johnson will take Mu’s spot in the event.
“In one of the most physical races I have ever been in, I came up 4th and missed top 3 by .01 of a second which was initially heartbreaking,” she said in an Instagram post. “I gave it all I had to the point where my legs said we can’t go anymore and I’m incredibly proud of that! Although I didn’t earn a top 3 placing, I was granted a spot to represent Team USA at World Champs in Budapest off of a scratch (thanks to @athiiing for giving up her spot). It’s not everyday you line up next to an Olympic champ and I look forward to more battles over 1500m in the future!”
Johnson will join this year’s 1500m national champion Nikki Hiltz as well as Cory McGee as the three members of the women’s 1500m team in Budapest. Johnson finished in 6th place in the women’s 1500m last year at the World Championships in Eugene.
