One of the best long jumpers in high school history has hung up her spikes.

Kate Hall announced last week that she would be retiring from the sport of track and field after dealing with a series of injuries.

“I don’t even know how to begin to say what I’m about to say, but I’m saying goodbye to my first love, track & field,” she said on Instagram. “A year ago I NEVER could have imagined I would have made this decision, but once again God had different plans for me.

I know there’s a reason for everything and after 2 knee surgeries and almost 3 years of rehabbing those injuries, I now know the reason for them. To find joy. Not just in track, not just in training, not just in winning, not just in my accomplishments… but from living in the present, enjoying the small things, spending time with friends and family, and learning that track isn’t ME, but just something I do and love.”

Hall formerly held the high school record in the long jump, which she set in 2015. She competed for University of Georgia, where she won the outdoor national championship in the event in 2017, and the indoor national title in 2018.

I’m a sports journalist based in Florida and I’ve covered a couple of different sports so far early on in my career, but I love the sport of track and field and the art of running. Everyone has a story and everyone has a story worth telling. My prayer is that the stories of the great athletes of this sport are told, and that the sport grows to new creative heights, so that the sport gets the respect it deserves.
