At the opening Diamond League meet of the season, Mondo Duplantis bettered his already staggering pole vault world record, jumping 6.24m (previous mark was 6.23m).
In his series, Mondo only jumped four times, including the world record jump. He had first-attempt clearances at 5.62m, 5.82m, 6.00m, and in his first attempt at 6.24m, he came down with another world record.
Going into the meet, he said “I don’t put limits on myself so of course, in my mind, I always think that I’m capable of a record. If everything lines up the way it can, then I can be doing things like the world record.”
Duplantis has been a world record setting machine the past few years, having previously set new marks at the 2022 World Championships (6.21m) and 2023 Prefontaine Classic (6.23m), continually pushing the limits achievable in the pole vault.
USA’s Sam Kendricks finished in runner-up position in Xiamen, with his best clearance coming at 5.82m before three unsuccessful attempts at 6.00m.
