The 2024 edition of the Adrian Martinez Classic is scheduled to take place on June 8th with elite races kicking off at 6pm ET. Competition will include men’s and women’s 800m, 1500m, and 5000m races.

HOW TO WATCH: Livestream will be available here from Bay State Running on June 8th at 6pm ET

The top of the program will see the men’s and women’s 800 meters, each with two sections (full schedule below), with the women’s field being absolutely stacked with contenders. We will see Elle St. Pierre, Helen Schlactenhaufen, 2023 Champion Emily Mackay, Heather MacLean, and Michaela Meyer all on the starting line.

This will be St. Pierre’s first 800 meters of the season, presumably getting some speed work in ahead of the upcoming Olympic Trials. She is fresh off a new personal best of 3:56.00 in the 1500m from the Pre Classic and a 14:34.12 PB in the 5000m from the LA Grand Prix. Also of note, Elle is the Adrian Martinez Classic’s 2019 champion in the 5000m; her winning time of 15:08.61 is the current meet record.

The women’s A race is intended to be paced at 57.5 seconds through 400. Meet Director Stephen Lane said, “As you might imagine, most athletes’ eyes are on the Trials: some trying just to get in, some trying to set themselves up to make the team.”

For the men’s 1500 meters, 2023 runner-up Jack Salisbury (Empire Elite) returns to lead the field. He has a 3:57.88 mile already under his belt from the Penn Relays in April. He will look to hold off teammate Nick Dahl and Atlanta Track Club’s Aidan Ryan. Dahl and Ryan also posted 3:57 miles at the Penn Relays, edging Salisbury to the line in that race.

The evening ends with two exciting women’s races: the 5000m (7:15pm ET) and the 1500m (7:35pm ET).

The 5000m will have Abbey Cooper, Lauren Gregory, Erika Kemp, and 2023 Champion Bethany Hasz on the start line. Cooper set a new personal record earlier this season for 3000 meters indoors (8:48.80), and has already run 15:11 for 5k outdoors, just over 1 second off the Trials qualifier. Hasz will give Cooper a run for her money. She ran a 15:05.80 at the LA Grand Prix last month (a new personal best for her).

Under Armour Mission Run Baltimore teammates Ellie Leather and Abbe Goldstein will take on 2023 Champion Annie Rodenfels and Helen Schlactenhaufen in the 1500m to close the meet. Schlactenhaufen will be doubling, as she is on the start list for the 800m just an hour and half earlier. Leather ran 4:25.23 for the mile indoors at the BU Valentine meet in February, and this will be her fourth 1500m of the outdoor season. Rodenfels, who we typically see contesting the longer distances, will be running her first 1500m of the season.

About the Adrian Martinez Classic

The Adrian Martinez Classic began as a tribute to a great runner and wonderful young man, Adrian Martinez. Adrian was a champion miler at Concord-Carlilse High School, team leader, and all around great guy. The summer after he graduated from Williams College, Adrian suffered a fatal sudden cardiac arrest while playing soccer with friends (another of his great pastimes). Adrian’s passing was a sad shock to all who knew him, but the Martinez Classic is a way to honor his life by doing something he truly loved: running with friends. The meet celebrates his life and legacy by bringing together elite and community runners for a day of competition and camaraderie. Past winners of the various events at the Classic include Ce’Aira Brown, Olivia Baker, John Reniewicki, and David Torrence.
