In a post on Instagram, Elaine Thompson-Herah announced that she sustained an injury at the New York Grand Prix which has now taken her from the Jamaican Olympic Trials and the Paris Olympic Games.
In the post, she said, “I felt something in the race and still insist to push, couple steps to the line I realize something is really wrong. I sat on the ground because I couldn’t apply any pressure to the leg whatsoever as I was carried off the track.” As it turns out, she had a small tear to her Achilles tendon.
Thompson-Herah is among the greatest sprinters of all time. She has been on the medal stand for international competitions for the entire past decade. She is a six-time Olympic medalist (including the individual 100m / 200m gold medal double in Rio and Tokyo) and six-time World Championships medalist. Her 100 meter performance from the 2021 Prefontaine Classic, running 10.54 seconds, puts her second all-time, behind only the legendary FloJo. Thompson-Herah would have been among the favorites to medal again at these upcoming Games, if not three-peat for gold.
