Michael Granville’s 26 Year (!) Old High School 800 Meter Record Is The Target Of Cade Flatt and Others on June 17th

What a year for high school middle distance running! This weekend Rheinhardt Harrison joined Colin Sahlman, Gary Martin and Connor Burns as high school sub 4 minute milers. Brooks, Adidas, Nike and New Balance are all hosting “national” high school events between June 15 and June 18, so it would not surprise anyone if we see another sub 4 or two. On the girls side Juliette Whittaker, Roisin Willis, Sophia Gorriaran and Sadie Engelhardt – to name a few – have been assaulting the all-time lists for 800 meters and the mile.

But, in the midst of all this record-setting Michael Granville’s 1:46.45 continues to stand tall as the high school 800 meter record for 26 years!…but maybe not for long. Cade Flatt has not been bashful about his goal to take this record down on June 17th at the New Balance meet in Philadelphia and he has the skills and determination to do it.

For now at least, let’s keep celebrating Michael Granville, and one way is to bring attention to the moving piece he wrote in 2020. Its a tough story to hear, yet it is very much a triumphant one.

Thank you to Mike Fanelli for highlighting this piece, which you can read here on MileSplitUSA:
