The 800 meter event at the 2024 Prefontaine Classic is going to be one to watch.
The Diamond League and the Pre Classic announced that reigning World medalists Keely Hodgkinson, Mary Moraa, and Athing Mu would be toeing the line, head-to-head-to-head on May 25 in Eugene, Oregon.
Update: Athing Mu will miss the Pre Classic 800m due to a sore hamstring, from Runner’s World
At the 2023 World Championships in Budapest, the above noted trio filled out the podium with Moraa earning gold, followed by Hodkinson and Mu in silver and bronze places, respectively. In that race, Mu lead from the beginning in typical style, however she was caught and passed by Moraa and Hodkinson on the final straight in an incredible finish.
Athing Mu boasts an outdoor 800 meter personal best and American Record of 1:54.97 which she ran at the 2023 Prefontaine Classic (which also served as the Diamond League final that year). Also at that race, Great Britain’s Keely Hodgkinson ran a personal best and National Record of her own, finishing in 1:55.19. Mary Moraa of Kenya also set a personal best in 2023 for the distance in 1:56.03, which she set at the World Championships.
