At the Chicago Marathon this morning, Kenya’s Kelvin Kiptum and Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands broke the tape as men’s and women’s winner, each setting historic times and course records along the way.

Kiptum, in his third attempt at the distance ran away from the field in world record fashion, finishing in 2:00:35, nearly three and a half minutes ahead of second place finisher Benson Kipruto (2:04:02), and 34 seconds faster than the record set by Eliud Kipchoge at the 2022 Berlin Marathon.

Hassan, also running just her second marathon, finished in a course-record time of 2:13:44. This is the second fastest women’s marathon time ever run, behind only Tigist Assefa’s leading mark set two weeks ago in Berlin (2:11:33). First runner-up is Ruth Chepngetich, who crossed the finish line in 2:15:37.

Hassan debuted at the distance earlier this year in April at the TCS London Marathon, where she was also victorious. Arguably one of the greatest athletes of all time given her range across a multitude of distances, Hassan has earned World and Olympic medals ranging from 1500 meters to 10k.

The 2022 Valencia Marathon is where Kiptum made his debut, running the fastest debut marathon of all time (2:01:53), which he then followed with an incredible winning performance at the 2023 London Marathon (2:01:25).

The title of First Americans in Chicago go to Connor Mantz (6th in 2:07:47) and Emily Sisson (7th in 2:22:09). Mantz was directly followed by Clayton Young in a PR (2:08:00), Galen Rupp (2:08:48), and Sam Chelanga (2:08:50), putting four American men within the top-10. Following Sisson were Molly Seidel (8th in 2:23:07) and Sara Vaughn (10th in 2:23:24).

Des Linden set a Masters American Record, finishing in 2:27:35, besting Deena Kastor’s previous record of 2:27:47 which she set at the 2015 Chicago Marathon.
