At a meet in Ramona, Oklahoma, Mykolas Alekna broke a 38 year old record with a 74.35 meter discus throw. The previous record of 74.08 meters was held by Jürgen Schult, set in 1986. It had been the longest standing men’s world record.

Alekna is a European champion and had both a silver (2022, Eugene) and bronze (2023, Budapest) World Championship medal. He is the youngest person ever to throw beyond 70 meters, and has a strong lineage in the discus throw, as the son of Olympic double discus throw champion Virgilijus Alekna.

The 21-year old competes for Lithuania at World events, and collegiately for the University of California where he is a junior.
