It was announced today that Reggie Bush, a high school sprint standout while at Helix High School, would have his Heisman Trophy reinstated.
Prior to Bush’s fame growing while at the University of Southern California, he was an all-state sprinter, setting impressive marks in the 50m, 100m, and 200m, of 5.85, 10.42, and 21.06 seconds. He also happened to be the nation’s #1 prep running back.
Bush’s explosiveness and elusiveness on the football field while at USC was second to none during his final season for the Trojans. During the 2005 season, he was a unanimous first-team All-American, was named the Associated Press College Football Player of the Year and also won the Doak Walker Award, which is given to the nation’s best running back. He led the nation with an average of 222.3 all-purpose yards per game and would notoriously leave a trail of defenders on the way to the endzone. Most notably, among the year end awards, he also won that year’s Heisman Trophy, a title which he forfeited in 2010 following an investigation by the NCAA finding that he received lavish gifts while at USC.
Fast forward 14 years, and the Heisman Trust is reinstating Bush’s title and returning the trophy (which Bush relinquished two years after forfeiting the title), citing changes to the college football landscape around the NCAA’s NIL policies.
