At a meet built around setting records at the adidas headquarters in Herzogenaurach, Germany, Kenya’s Emmanuel Wanyonyi pushed the road mile word record to 3:54.5.
Wanyonyi’s record came by a final surge past previous record holder Hobbs Kessler with 200 meters to go, breaking the tape with over a second to spare and celebrating with a point to the finish line just before crossing in world record time.
An athlete we typically see in shorter races on the track, Wanyonyi is the silver medalist in the 800m from the 2023 World Championships in Budapest and is the the defending Diamond League champion in the same event.
Per the description on YouTube, the ADIZERO Road to Records is in its fourth edition and is designed to do one thing: make running history. Road races were run in the 10k, 5k, mile, and 800m.
In the record setting race, Kessler finished in 3:57 and fellow countryman Sam Prakel (who was the inaugural road mile world record holder) completed the mile course in 4:03.
