At the Mt. SAC Relays, Ventura High School’s Sadie Engelhardt broke the national high school outdoor record in the mile, running 4:31.72.
The senior from Ventura bested Katelyn Tuohy’s outdoor record of 4:33.87. She did so running from the front immediately off the gun, speeding through the first lap in 65 seconds, followed by laps of 67 and 68 seconds before bringing it home in 71 seconds for the record.
Engelhardt has a history of running fast miles at Mt. SAC; she had set her previous outdoor personal best of 4:38 at the same race last year. She is a two-time New Balance Nationals indoor mile champion.
In total, 13 girls ran under 5 minutes for the mile in the race, with Chiara Dailey (La Jolla) coming in second with 4:48 and Madeleine Gear (Foundation Christian) rounding out the podium with a 4:51 finish.
On the next day of competition, a quartet from Ventura High School ran the Distance Medley Relay (DMR) in 11:21.85, with Engelhardt on anchor, for her second national record in less than 24 hours. She shares the record books with teammates Melanie True (1200m, 3:36.38), Valentina Fakrogha (400m, 54.73), and Aelo Curtis (800m, 2:16.80). Engelhardt’s split for the final 1600m was run in 4:33.95.
Mary Cain holds the absolute mile record for prep runners, having run 4:28.25 indoors in 2013. Sadie is committed to NC State in the fall and has an NIL deal with New Balance.
