The First Ever NCAA Championships

Share this article:

Did you know that the first ever NCAA Indoor Championship was held 57 years ago on this day in 1965. The caveat, it was for men only. The Women’s event did not happen for another 18 years.

Here is Walt Murphy’s brief summary of the 1965 event.

1965

The brainchild of Don Canham, Michigan’s Athletic Director, the inaugural NCAA Indoor Championships (March 12-13, 1965) were held on the 11-lap track in Detroit’s Cobo Arena. Among the winners were Charlie Greene, who won the first of his three NCAA titles in the 60-yard dash, and Randy Matson (Shot Put).

Since freshmen weren’t eligible for varsity competition, Washington State’s Gerry Lindgren ran in a special mile, finishing 2nd to former Illinois star Al Carius (4:09.0 to 4:09.4). Carius has been the highly successful cross country coach at Division III’s North Central College since 1966.
