NFL athletes with track and field experience are putting up numbers each week. Below is a fantasy football week 9 recap of players who are on a roster and also have a background in track and field.
Jahan Dotson of the Commanders had another great outing, tallying 10+ points for the second week in a row. These past two outings have seen Dotson’s output nearly equal that of his previous seven, which could mean good things for the hot receiver moving forward. Stefon Diggs tallied the most points on the day for non-quarterback skill position players, notching 86 yards a touchdown and a 2-point conversion. Also with a great day was Raheem Mostert of the Dolphins. Mostert is no stranger to the highlight reel, and the bigger surprise may be that his compatriots (Hill and Waddle) had relatively quiet outings comparably.
View below for a full rundown of stats and point totals from the past week’s fantasy action.
Marquise Brown
Wide Receiver, Arizona Cardinals
Caught 4 passes on 8 targets for 24
2.40 points
Frankly, it was a good statistical outcome on an afternoon where “Clayton Tune” committed three turnovers and completed just 11 passes for 58 yards against the league’s best defense. It was also a one-off, as it seems overwhelmingly likely Kyler Murray (knee) will finally make his season debut in Week 10 against the Falcons. Murray’s insertion would make Brown a strong WR3 with room to ascend to WR2 status.
Trey McBride
Tight End, Arizona Cardinals
Caught 3 passes on 5 targets for 22 yards
2.20 points
McBride’s catch and yardage totals, modest as they were, qualified as the second highest for the Cardinals on an afternoon when rookie Clayton Tune threw for only 58 yards in his starting debut. Despite the downturn following a breakout 10-catch, 95-yard, one-touchdown performance versus the Ravens in Week 8, McBride could reemerge as a significant component in the air attack if Kyler Murray (knee) is activated ahead of a Week 10 home matchup against the Falcons.
Kyle Pitts
Tight End, Atlanta Falcons
Caught 4 of 5 passes for 56 yards
5.60 points
Pitts’ modest stat line was still good enough for his second-best yardage total of the season, while also marking only the second time he’s topped 50 receiving yards for the campaign. His most notable gain came on a 27-yard play early in the fourth quarter on a catch deep down the left sideline. The other potential positive was that this was Taylor Heinicke’s first full game, perhaps a sign that improved production could be on the way for Pitts.
Lamar Jackson
Quarterback, Baltimore Ravens
Completed 21 of 26 passes for 187 yards; rushed 10 times for 60 yards
13.48 points
The Ravens were able to coast throughout much of the game after building up a 17-3 lead by halftime. As a result, Jackson had limited pass attempts and a similarly underwhelming fantasy fantasy performance. The positive was his production as a rusher, which marked the third time he’s topped 60 rushing yards on the season. Jackson also suffered an injury scare in the fourth quarter when he appeared to tweak his ankle, but coach John Harbaugh indicated after the game that the issue wasn’t serious, per Jeff Zrebiec of The Athletic.
Devin Duvernay
Wide Receiver, Baltimore Ravens
Caught 2 passes on 2 targets for 10 yards
1.0 point
Stefon Diggs
Wide Receiver, Buffalo Bills
Caught 6 of 7 targets for 86 yards, plus 1 touchdown and 1 2-point conversion
16.60 points
Diggs led the team in receiving yards and also gave the Bills a glimmer of hope with a 17-yard touchdown grab with 3:32 remaining and subsequent two-point conversion catch. The perennial Pro Bowler has a solid 21-214-2 line on 31 targets in the three contests since his four-game streak of 100-yard efforts was snapped, and he’ll draw a potentially favorable matchup against the Broncos in a Week 10 Monday night home battle on Nov. 13.
Ja’Marr Chase
Wide Receiver, Cincinnati Bengals
Caught 4 of 8 targets for 41 yards
4.10 points
Chase took a back seat to Tee Higgins (8-110-0), who finished as the Bengals’ leading receiver Sunday. The usual No. 1 option also ceded a pair of touchdowns in the red zone to tight ends Drew Sample and Irv Smith Jr., resulting in a down performance by the wideout’s lofty standards. Chase was coming off of a massive three-game stretch in which he produced 31 receptions, 372 yards and four touchdowns for fantasy owners, which helps soften the blow of Sunday’s underwhelming line. In positive news, Joe Burrow continues to excel as his health returns, putting Chase in a prime position to bounce back against the Texans next Sunday. Chase has since been labeled day-to-day with a back injury.
Marquise Goodwin
Wide Receiver, Cleveland Browns
0 catches on 2 targets
0 points
Goodwin sustained a head injury after he appeared to take a shot to the helmet from a defender while he attempted to haul in a third-down pass from Deshaun Watson during the Browns’ first possession of the second half. The ultimate role player, Goodwin and his deep speed should be considered week to week.
Elijah Moore
Wide Receiver, Cleveland Browns
Caught 2 of 2 targets for 14 yards
1.40 points
The Browns didn’t have to open up the offense against a non-competitive Cardinals team, but it was a discouraging Moore statline in Deshaun Watson’s first full game since Week 3. Providing zero floor or ceiling while still waiting on his first 2023 touchdown, Moore looks like a poor WR4 bet for Week 10 against the Ravens’ elite pass defense.
Robert Woods
Wide Receiver, Houston Texans
Woods was inactive for Houston’s week 9 matchup against Tampa Bay.
Woods has yet to practice since Houston’s Week 6 game against the Saints, so his absence against the Buccaneers comes as no surprise. The veteran wide receiver’s next chance to play will come in Week 10 against the Bengals. Houston’s top three wide receivers against Tampa Bay will be Nico Collins, Tank Dell and Noah Brown.
Devin Singletary
Running Back, Houston Texans
13 rushes for 26 yards; caught 2 of 2 targets for 0 yards
2.60 points
Singletary paced the Texans in rushing yards while serving as the de facto lead back in the absence of Dameon Pierce (ankle). Singletary found precious little running room against Tampa Bay’s standout run defense, however, leading to minimal production relative to opportunity. The fifth-year pro could revert to a complementary role as early as a Week 10 road matchup against the Bengals.
Clyde Edwards-Helaire
Running Back, Kansas City Chiefs
Edwards-Helaire was inactive for Kansas City’s week 9 matchup against Miami due to an illness
Kadarius Toney
Wide Receiver, Kansas City Chiefs
Caught 1 of 1 targets for 18 yards
1.80 points
Toney finished the day with only 12 offensive snaps, ranking sixth in the pecking order at the wide receiver position. He’s tallied just a single target in each of the last two games and sports a combined 25 offensive snaps between them, so there’s little reason to roster the fourth-year wideout in any but deep fantasy leagues.
Mecole Hardman
Wide Receiver, Kansas City Chiefs
Caught 3 of 3 targets for 10 yards
1.00 points
After playing just 11 offensive snaps in his 2023 Chiefs debut, Hardman saw his workload increase in his second game back, as his snaps were doubled to 22 against the Broncos. He finished equal with Justin Watson on that front and again played more than Kadarius Toney, but he still trailed Rashee Rice (37), Marquez Valdes-Scantling (35) and Skyy Moore (33). That said, neither MVS nor Moore posted impressive lines, so there may still be room for Hardman to carve out a regular role.
Gerald Everett
Tight End, Los Angeles Chargers
Caught 2 of 2 targets for 18 yards
1.80 points
Everett certainly looked spry after missing the previous week with a hip injury, rumbling forward on a broken checkdown pass for 17 yards in the first half. Unfortunately for fantasy managers, the Jets offense hardly put up a fight, and the team attempted its second-fewest pass attempts (30) of the 2023 campaign, relegating Everett to an afterthought in this one.
Tyreek Hill
Wide Receiver, Miami Dolphis
Caught 8 of 10 targets for 62 yards; 1 rush for 3 yards; 1 fumble lost
4.50 points
The Dolphins’ offense was dysfunctional for most of this game, and that was punctuated by a second-quarter fumble from Tyreek Hill. He caught the ball behind the line of scrimmage, was immediately hit, and eventually lost control of the ball. Chiefs safety Mike Edwards picked the ball up and as Hill attempted to tackle him, Edwards pitched it to Bryan Cook, who took it to the house. Hill still paced the Dolphins in all receiving stats outside of touchdowns, but Week 9 was a rude awakening for the Dolphins and that trickled down to Hills’ bottom line. He will look to get back on track after his team’s Week 10 bye.
Jaylen Waddle
Wide Receiver, Miami Dolphins
Caught 3 of 6 targets for 42 yards; rushed 1 time for 12 yards
5.40 points
Waddle suffered a knee injury early in the contest, but he was able to quickly return to the field. That didn’t lead to much production, however, as the Miami offense was held back offensively by a strong Kansas City defense. As a result, Waddle’s streak of three games with at least 50 receiving yards came to an end. Miami’s Week 10 bye should allow Waddle to get healthy ahead of their upcoming matchup with the Raiders.
De’Von Achane
Running Back, Miami Dolphins
Achane continues his stint on the injured reserve, likely to be out until week 11
Raheem Mostert
Running Back, Miami Dolphins
12 rushes for 85 yards and 1 touchdown
14.50 points
Miami was unable to get their typically explosive passing attack going against Kansas City, and much of their success came from Mostert. He accounted for one of the team’s two gains of more than 20 yards, as well as a 13-yard touchdown run late in the third quarter. Mostert also dominated work on the ground and should see his volume increase when the Dolphins play from ahead.
Justin Jefferson
Wide Receiver, Minnesota Vikings
Jefferson continues his stint on the injured reserve, reportedly out 4-6 weeks with a hamstring injury
Jalen Reagor
Wide Receiver, New England Patriots
Caught 1 of 6 targets for 11 yards
1.10 points
Reagor was on the field for 49 of a possible 64 snaps on offense in Sunday’s 20-17 loss to the Commanders. With Kendrick Bourne (knee) on IR and DeVante Parker out with a concussion, Reagor saw his most substantial workload of the season.
Chris Olave
Wide Receiver, New Orleans Saints
Caught 6 of 8 targets for 46 yards and 1 touchdown
10.60 points
The Saints tried to get Olave going early, giving him the first target of the game. Derek Carr had more of a connection with him this week as Olave scored a touchdown in the first quarter. However, he still didn’t have a deep reception as the Carr could not push the ball downfield. Olave also dropped a third-down pass in the third quarter, ending a Saints possession early. It’s clear that Olave is the Saints’ lead receiver, but in an offense that does not push the ball downfield, his ceiling is limited. Consider Olave a back-end WR2 in a Week 10 matchup against the Vikings.
Garrett Wilson
Wide Receiver, New York Jets
Caught 7 of 13 targets for 80 yards; 1 fumble lost
6.00 points
Wilson fumbled in the first quarter, but that didn’t deter the Jets from feeding their top receiver 13 targets for a second consecutive game, and he has been targeted at least 12 times in four of the past five games. With little receiving talent besides Wilson, New York has little choice but to force feed the standout wideout, but defenses also can afford to shift significant attention in his direction. Still, it’s encouraging that three of his four highest yardage totals have come in the past three games, though Wilson will be looking to break a touchdown drought that dates back to Week 2 when the Jets fly to Vegas in Week 10.
Devon Allen
Wide Receiver, Philadelphia Eagles
Allen remained on the Eagles practice squad for their contest with the Dolphins this week
Kenneth Gainwell
Running Back, Phildelphia Eagles
3 rushes for 22 yards and 1 touchdown; caught 1 of 1 targets for 1 yard
8.30 points
The third-year running back launched himself into the end zone with a forward flip from the three-yard line in the first quarter for the game’s first points, giving Gainwell his second TD of the season — both of which have come in the last three contests. His workload behind starter D’Andre Swift remains limited, but he’s making the most of it, and Gainwell’s role could grow coming out of the Eagles’ Week 10 bye as the team gets ready for a Super Bowl rematch with Kansas City in Week 11.
Jalen Hurts
Quarterback, Philadelphia Eagles
Completed 17 of 23 passes for 207 yards and 2 touchdowns; rushed 10 times for 36 yards and a rushing touchdown
31.88 points
While he didn’t deliver a lot of yardage, Hurts came up big when it counted, tossing a 29-yard TD to DeVonta Smith and a four-yard score to A.J. Brown in the third quarter as the Eagles erased a 17-14 halftime deficit. The QB had earlier gotten into the end zone on a Brotherly Shove from the one-yard line in the second quarter. Hurts has produced at least three touchdowns in three straight games, posting an 8:1 TD:INT over that stretch while adding two rushing TDs, and he’ll be able to rest over a Week 10 bye before getting ready for a Super Bowl rematch with Kansas City in Week 11.
George Pickens
Wide Receiver, Pittsburgh Steelers
Caught 2 of 5 targets for -1 yards
-0.10 points
Pickens topped 100 yards in the Steelers’ matchups immediately before and after their Week 6 bye, but he’s been held in check over two games since then. The 22-year-old nearly salvaged his fantasy results with a touchdown catch in the second half, but he failed to get both feet down in bounds upon further review. Pickens has been targeted at least five times in every appearance this season, but his output has been more inconsistent now that Diontae Johnson is back in action.
Logan Thomas
Tight End, Washington Commanders
Caught 4 of 6 targets for 31 yards
3.10 points
It was Thomas’ third straight game with at least six targets and four catches, following a one-target outing Week 6 at Atlanta. His overall averages of 4.1 catches for 38.9 yards per game at least keep him on the map as a streaming option or bye-week replacement ahead of a Week 10 contest in Seattle.
Jahan Dotson
Wide Receiver, Washington Commanders
Caught 4 of 8 targets for 69 yards and 1 touchdown
12.90 points
Dotson tied the score at 17-17 with a 33-yard touchdown catch in the third quarter. He led the Commanders in targets while finishing one catch and four receiving yards shy of Terry McLaurin’s team-leading totals. After posting just 183 yards and one touchdown through seven games, Dotson has 177 yards and two touchdowns in his last two. He’ll look to stay hot in Week 10 against the Seahawks.
