Joe was an elite athlete out of Cal Poly SLO, clocking a 3:58.3 mile at the 1982 Prefontaine Classic and he competed at the 1984 U.S. Olympic Trials. He is an advisor with the HOKA ONE ONE Aggies, an Olympic Development Club. He ran as a Masters runner (clocking a 4:23 mile at Hayward Field and snagging an age group XC title in Houston) until his legs said no mas. He is now an avid cyclist, winning an age group national title in mountain biking. Along with his wife Lori, they have a sprinter van and travel the country looking for great places to ride and camp.
