The 2023 Millrose Games released their Men’s 3000m field in a press release Thursday, highlighting several world-caliber distance athletes including Josh Kerr, Luis Grijalva and Cooper Teare.
On Athletics Club’s Geordie Beamish edged out Teare in the 2022 edition of this race, completing a perfectly-timed comeback to win by 0.11 seconds and set a New Zealand national record. Beamish and Teare are both back for this year’s race.
This may be the first time we’ll see Teare in a Bowerman Track Club uniform. Teare joined BTC this summer after coach Jerry Schumacher moved the team from Portland to Eugene so he could take the head coaching position at the University of Oregon.
The 2022 Millrose race was Teare’s professional debut. Since then, he’s won the U.S. 1500m title and competed at the World Athletics Championships.
“I’m beyond excited to be returning to the Millrose Games to experience the electric crowds and fast times,” Teare said.
Beamish’s win last year was considered an upset, but On Running sounded confident about the rematch, tweeting “We’re ready” after Millrose announced the field.
On Running athletes Joe Klecker and Morgan McDonald will join Beamish in the race. Klecker has surprising speed for a U.S. 10,000m champion and Olympian, running 7:39 at the 2020 Millrose race. McDonald is an Australian Olympian at 5000m.
Olympic 1500m bronze medalist Josh Kerr technically has the slowest personal best in the field. He last raced the 3000m as a 17-year-old, running 8:35. He’s expected to run a little faster this time around.
Kerr had a disappointing summer, finishing out of medal contention in the World Championships and Commonwealth Games 1500m races but he’ll try to turn it around during the indoor track season.
HOKA NAZ Elite has two athletes in the race — Luis Grijalva, who was fourth in the World Championships 5000m this year, and Olin Hacker, the defending 5000m NCAA champion. This Millrose race will be a reunion for former Wisconsin teammates Hacker and McDonald.
Northern Arizona’s Nico Young is also racing at Millrose, fresh off a second-place finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championships last month. The 20-year-old ran the Millrose 3000m three years ago and has some other professional racing experience under his belt.
Past and present Wisconsin and NAU runners make up over half of the field: Hacker and McDonald from Wisconsin and Young, Beamish and Grijalva from NAU.
This will also be the first major professional test for defending NCAA 10,000m champion Dylan Jacobs of Tennessee.
The 115th Millrose Games, which are part of the 2023 World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold, will be held February 11 at The Armory in New York City.
