Woody Kincaid won’t be wearing a Bowerman Track Club uniform tonight at the Boston Terrier Classic, according to his agent.
Kincaid is entered tonight in the 5000m under the team affiliation “Nike,” not “Bowerman Track Club.”
Agent Dan Lilot said that Kincaid is “gathering info on what might be the best fit for the remainder of his career, especially with a possible move to the marathon after Paris” to LetsRun’s Jonathan Gault on Thursday.
Lilot added that Kincaid is taking “a bit of a running Rumschpringe,” implying that the Olympian is assessing other training options besides the Bowerman Track Club.
Kincaid has been training in Flagstaff this month with NAU coach Mike Smith since an “injury scare in the fall,” per Lilot.
“Eventually he will figure out his longer term training/coaching situation,” Lilot said. “All options are still on the table.”
Many running fans speculated that Woody was training Smith after NAU All-American Drew Bosley posted two runs on Strava referencing Kincaid on January 10 and January 20.
“Morning in dome with abdihamid [Nur,] luis [Grijalva] & woody,” Bosley wrote in a Strava post caption on January 10, presumably referring to NAU’s indoor track (the Walkup Skydome) and Kincaid. Nur and Grijalva are both NAU alums and HOKA athletes, and Bosley and Grijalva are entered in the 3000m at the Terrier Classic tonight.
Bowerman is also currently in Flagstaff for a training camp that started early this week. Kincaid has not been featured in any BTC content since then.
Two Bowerman athletes have already moved on from the club this year. Britain’s Marc Scott announced he was leaving the club last week to train with Eliud Kipchoge and the NN Running Team in Kenya, citing frustration among the club with the team’s move to Eugene and head coach Jerry Schumacher’s new role as the Oregon head coach.
“I didn’t think we’d really get as much time and effort from Jerry,” Scott said in an interview with LetsRun’s Jonathan Gault. “I just thought he was going to be run off his feet with a lot of college athletes as well. So I wasn’t really in favor of the move to Eugene to start with.”
Additionally, Amos Bartlemeyer of Germany announced he was also leaving BTC on Wednesday and will make his appearance tonight at the Lilac Grand Prix for Nike’s Union Athletics Club.
Scott said many Bowerman members “definitely were upset” about the move to Eugene.
“Probably more upset than happy, on the whole for the team,” Scott said.
Kincaid was a 2021 Olympian in the 5000m and 10000m and won the 5000 at the U.S Olympic Trials. He is the sixth-fastest American at 5000m all-time. Whatever team he lands on will gain a serious threat for the 2024 Olympic trials.
