An untimely illness has forced veteran runner Ben True from competing at the New York City Marathon on Sunday.
“Heartbroken, he said Thursday on Instagram. “Today, my plan was to board a small prop plane and fly to NYC for the @nycmarathon. It has been the race I’ve circled on my calendar as my top priority for the year. Ever since crossing the finish line last November, I’ve wanted nothing more than to return for another bite of the Big Apple. I’ve put on blinders and poured my heart and soul into this build.
“Unfortunately, it is not to be. An untimely illness is forcing me to stay home. Sometimes life just spits in your eye. Not much else to say, except that I’ll recover and bounce back. Thank you to everyone who has helped me over these past few months. I wish the best to all those racing this weekend, I’ll be watching, cheering, and dreaming I was alongside.”
True ran in the New York City Marathon last year, which was his first marathon of his career. He finished 7th overall, and was the No. 2 American behind Elkanah Kibet.
True holds the American record in 5k (road race) and won the USATF 20 km Championships last year.
