On Tuesday, the elite men’s and women’s fields for the 2023 Bank of America Chicago Marathon were announced, and it includes some of the best talent in marathon history.

Update October 8, 2023: Kelvin Kiptum, Sifan Hassan win big at Chicago Marathon

“Chicago has been home to world-records, historic debuts and has served as an introduction to runners who became legends of the sport,” Executive Race Director Carey Pinkowski said in the press release. “As we prepare to celebrate a landmark year in the race’s history, we anticipate historic performances that we will talk about for years to come.”

The men’s field will once again showcase some of the best talent in the sport. Last year’s Chicago Marathon winner Benson Kipruto of Kenya returns to the race to defend his title. He’ll fend off elite talent that includes Kelvin Kiptum of Kenya, who ran a new lifetime best of 2:01:25 at the London Marathon this year. Conner Mantz and Galen Rupp headline the American contingent that will compete in the race.

World record holder Marcel Hug of Switzerland will look to defend his title in the men’s wheelchair division. He’ll face off against the likes of Ernst Van Dyk of South Africa, as well as Daniel Romanchuk, who won the Chicago Marathon three times.

The women’s field is one of the deepest in marathon history. Defending Chicago Marathon winner Ruth Chepngetich headlines the field, as she looks to replicate the same success that she achieved last year. She’ll be challenged by American record holder Emily Sission, as well as Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands and Genzebe Dibaba of Kenya, who’s making her marathon debut. The American contingent will include Molly Seidel, Emma Bates as well as Aliphine Tuliamuk.

Susannah Scaroni of the United States will look to defend her Chicago Marathon title in the Women’s Wheelchair Division. She’ll have to compete against a very talented field that includes Tatyana McFadden of the United States, as well as Manuela Schär of Switzerland.

I’m a sports journalist based in Florida and I’ve covered a couple of different sports so far early on in my career, but I love the sport of track and field and the art of running. Everyone has a story and everyone has a story worth telling. My prayer is that the stories of the great athletes of this sport are told, and that the sport grows to new creative heights, so that the sport gets the respect it deserves.
