The poor weather didn’t stop the excitement and joy that only the Boston Marathon could bring.

Thousands of fans took to the streets of Boston to cheer on the many competitors, and they were treated to a remarkable performance from the athletes who toed the line at the prestigious event.

On the men’s side, Kenya’s Evans Chebet won a tactical race over a very deep mens field that included the world record holder in the event Eliud Kipchoge. Chabet finished the race running a winning time of 2:05.54.

The women’s race was filled with extreme excitement, as well as great suspense. Hellen Obiri of Kenya took control of the race in the final miles, winning with a time of 2:21.38. She finished 12 seconds ahead of Amane Beriso, who finished in second place with her time of 2:21.50.

The Americans were well represented in both the men’s and women’s field, but Emma Bates stole the show with her remarkable performance at the Boston Marathon. She finished 5th overall, running a new personal best time of 2:22.10. Bates led throughout portions of the race.

John Anderson and Carrie Tollefson joined the booth with Meb Keflezighi to call the action at the Boston Marathon.

“It was awesome, I loved every minute of it,” Tollefson said. “The wheelchair races were phenomenal, so much drama there. The men’s race was awesome. Hellen Obiri was amazing. We are so used to seeing her crushing it on the track – whether she’s winning world medals or Olympic medals or whatever. But she kind of used that track mentality and she waited, and she waited. And that’s what she did a little bit wrong in New York when she had her debut marathon last fall. I think that track mentality, that intensity of covering moves and being on your toes and ready to go, that maybe wasn’t quite fitting for the marathon, but in Boston, it seemed like she nailed it. Her patience was there, she took in her fueling and her hydration. And she waited for that final kick like she does alot in track, and she just timed it perfectly. It’s so hard to do over 26.2. I think that was one of my favorite things.”

I’m a sports journalist based in Florida and I’ve covered a couple of different sports so far early on in my career, but I love the sport of track and field and the art of running. Everyone has a story and everyone has a story worth telling. My prayer is that the stories of the great athletes of this sport are told, and that the sport grows to new creative heights, so that the sport gets the respect it deserves.
