While it wasn’t much of a debate before, we can now officially say after last Friday’s performance that Faith Kipyegon is the greatest of all time in the women’s 1500m.
Kipyegon broke the world record in the women’s 1500m with her time of 3:49.11 at the Golden Gala Pietro Mennea in Florence, Italy.
“It’s amazing,” she said after the race. “I dedicate the world record to all of the mothers knowing that everything is possible. I told them already going into maternity leave and coming back, you will be stronger than before, and this is what I have shown them, that everything is possible.”
🗣 "I dedicate this world record to all the mothers…This is what I've shown them. Everything is possible."

Kipyegon broke the record that was previously held by Genzebe Dibaba, which she set in 2015, when she ran the then-record time of 3:50.07. Laura Muir finished second behind Kipyegon with her time of 3:57.09, while Jessica Hull of Australia broke her own Australian National record in the event with a new personal best time of 3:57.29.
Kipyegon’s new world record is just the latest accomplishment that she’s achieved in her storied career. She’s won two Olympic gold medals in the 1500m, while also picking up two world titles in the event as well.
