It’s been the year of Faith Kipyegon, as she continues to re-write the record books with remarkable and historic performances.
At the Diamond League meeting in Paris on Friday, Kipyegon broke the women’s 5000m world record with a blazing time of 14:05.20.
“I didn’t think about the world record, I don’t know how I made it,” Kipyegon said in an interview after the race. “I just focused on the green light and tried to stay relaxed and enjoy the race. When I saw that it was a world record, I was so surprised – I just wanted to improve on my PB, the world record was not my plan. I just ran after Gidey – she is an amazing lady.
I do not know what will be next – I’ll have to discuss it with my coach and my management. If my body is healthy, anything is possible.”
Kipyegon took the lead with around 600m remaining in the race. She went on to run a 60 second final lap in the race en route to her world record.
Kipyegon has had a very impressive stretch of races on the track so far in June. She broke the world record in the women’s 1500m last week in Florence, Italy, with a sensational time of 3:49.11.
