Highlights from a crazy weekend in track and field/cross country

This past weekend was one of the most exciting weekends in the sport of track and field, as well as cross country.

In the field events, Janeah Stewart tied Gwen Berry’s American record in the women’s weight throw with her mark of 25.60m/84 at the Vanderbilt Invitational. Stewart is a volunteer coach for her alma mater, Ole Miss.

On the cross country course, the team that’s set to represent Team USA  at the World Cross Country Championships was set on Saturday. Ednah Kurgat took home the win for the women’s race, and she’ll be joined by Makena Morley, Emily Durgin, Emily Lipari Weini Kelati and Katie Izzo in representing Team USA at the World Cross Country Championships.

Emmanuel Bor earned the victory in the men’s race on Saturday. He, along with Andrew Colley, Anthony Rotich, Leonard Korir, Sam Chelanga and Dillion Maggard make up the men’s team that will represent Team USA in February at the World Cross Country Championships.

Of all the remarkable performances that took place this past weekend, there’s one performance that stands out to Joshua Potts of 2 Black Runners.

“Massi Russell,” he said. “I think what Massi Russell did with the 60m collegiate record, I think that’s pretty insane. 7.75 that she hit, tied for No.12 all-time and it’s a new NCAA record. I think why this is a really big deal is because if you pay attention to (NCAATF), Massi Russell hasn’t been the headliner in ways, but she’s been the headliner on social media. So to see her put this together like this, it’s not that I’m just happy for her, but I’m happy for the sport as well.”

On this episode of Track Talk, Joshua and I discuss the fast and furious start to the NCAA Indoor season, teams and athletes to watch, matchups that we can’t wait to see, as well as what stood out to us at the USATF Cross Country National Championships.

I’m a sports journalist based in Florida and I’ve covered a couple of different sports so far early on in my career, but I love the sport of track and field and the art of running. Everyone has a story and everyone has a story worth telling. My prayer is that the stories of the great athletes of this sport are told, and that the sport grows to new creative heights, so that the sport gets the respect it deserves.
