One of the most exciting events in track and field this season has been the women’s shot put. Every competition, it seems that a new world lead, national record, or personal best has been achieved against elite competition. Last Saturday’s results proved that notion to be true.
At the LA Grand Prix, American shot putter Maggie Ewen had a career day, winning the competition with a new lifetime best throw of 20.45m in the event. This throw also gave her the world lead.
Ewen put the field away on her third attempt of the competition. Last year’s world champion, Chase Ealey, who previously held the world lead, finished second overall with her best throw measuring 19.98m.
Ewen has a diverse skill set when it comes to the throws. She not only excels at the shot put, but she’s elite in the women’s hammer throw as well. She has thrown 75.10m in the event this season, which came at the Tucson Elite Classic.
In her career, Ewen has made three World Championship teams (one indoor, two outdoor). Her best performance was at the 2019 World Championships in Doha, where she finished 4th overall.
