Masai Russell lit up the Texas Relays last weekend with her electrifying and historic performance in the 100m hurdles.
The graduate student who runs for the University of Kentucky set the collegiate record in the 100m hurdles with her winning time of 12.36 seconds. Her time is also the fastest time in the world so far this outdoor season.
Russell’s time broke the record that was previously held by Brianna Rollins McNeal (12.39), who set the record in 2013 while competing for Clemson. She’s also eclipsed the school record that was previously held by 2020 Olympic champion Jasmine Camacho Quinn (12.40)
Russell has been no stranger to breaking records this season. She broke the collegiate record in the women’s 60m hurdles in January, with her time of 7.75 seconds. Prior to her breaking the 100m hurdles record with a new lifetime best of 12.36 seconds, Russell’s then lifetime best in the event was 12.71 seconds.
Russell also ran on Kentucky’s 4×100 relay team that finished second behind Texas. Kentucky’s time of 42.81 is No. 5 all-time in program history.
