The NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships kicked off on Friday, and the action is already heating up after the first day of competition.

So far, we’ve seen three collegiate records go down in the preliminary rounds and finals of competition in the women’s events by Julien Alfred (Texas) Ackera Nugent (Arkansas) and Jasmine Moore (Florida).

Alfred started things off earlier on Friday in the women’s 60m, and she picked up where she left off at the Big 12 Championships. She bettered her NCAA record in the event with her time of 6.96, which was also a Championship record. Alfred’s time in the event is second in the world behind Aleia Hobbs. The world record in the women’s 60m is 6.92.

Ackera Nugent created separation from the field in the latter half of the race and ran a blistering time of 7.72 in the 60m hurdles. Her time not only broke the collegiate record in the event, but it’s the fastest time in the world this season and it broke the Jamaican National Record in the event as well.

Jasmine Moore continued to show why she’s the most dominant jumper in college track and field history. She won the women’s long jump with a mark of 7.03m that she recorded on her first attempt, which is a new NCAA record in the event. She broke Tara Davis Championship record of 6.93m that was set in 2021.

I’m a sports journalist based in Florida and I’ve covered a couple of different sports so far early on in my career, but I love the sport of track and field and the art of running. Everyone has a story and everyone has a story worth telling. My prayer is that the stories of the great athletes of this sport are told, and that the sport grows to new creative heights, so that the sport gets the respect it deserves.
