If you missed the action at the London Diamond League meet on Sunday, then you missed one of the best track meets of the year.
From the electrifying atmosphere that was all made possible by the 50,000 fans who gathered around in the stadium, to the athletes who showed up and showed out, the meet lived up to the hype and then some.
There were many great individual performances that took place throughout the meet. Here’s a short recap of a couple of the exciting races that took place on Sunday, including some performances that turned some heads.
One of the most exciting races of the day was the women’s 5000m. Gudaf Tsegay took home the win with a new personal best and meet record time of 14:12.29. She was one of 12 women who set a new personal best in the race. Other notable performances in the race include Sifan Hissan, who set a new personal best in the race with her time of 14:13.29 while also breaking the Dutch record. Alicia Monson broke Shelby Houlihan’s American record with her time of 14:19.45, which was a new personal best time for her. Medina Eisa broke the U20 world record with her time of 14:16.54.
In the men’s 400m, Wayde van Niekerk took home the win in a very competitive race. Van Niekerk’s winning time 44.36 was enough to hold off this year’s U.S. Outdoor champion Bryce Deadmon, who finished in second place with his time of 44.40. Vernon Norwood finished in third place, running 44.46. Matthew Hudson-Smith of Great Britain ran a new season’s best time of 44.72 to finish in fourth place.
It’s Ryan Crouser’s world in the men’s shot put, and basically we’re all living in it. The world record holder delivered another sensational performance in the event, setting a new meet record with his throw of 23.07m, which gave him the win against a talented field. Tom Walsh finished in second place, with his new season’s best throw of 22.58m. Joe Kovacs finished in third place with his mark of 21.87m.
