The sport of track and field lost an icon earlier this week.
Olympic gold medalist and sprint coach Harvey Glance passed away on Monday. He was 66 years old.
Glance was a high school phenom during his prep days in Phenix City, Alabama. He signed with the University of Auburn, and had an incredible college career during his time with the Tigers. As a freshman, he won the national title in the 60 yard dash during the indoor season. He then turned around and took home the 100m and 200m outdoor titles at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
From there, he earned a spot on the 1976 Olympic team, and was a member of Team USA’s gold medal winning men’s 4×100 relay team. He ended up winning four national titles as a member of Auburn’s track and field team, and won various medals throughout different championship meets throughout his career.
Glance then took to coaching after he retired from his running career. He returned to Auburn and was the head coach of the Tigers from 1991-1996. He then became the head coach at Alabama, where he coached the Crimson Tide until 2011.
He coached many talented athletes, with the most notable athlete being Kirani James. James won the Olympic gold medal in the 400m at the London Olympic Games in 2012. He also won the world championship in the event in 2011.
