Pre Classic set to host 2023 Diamond League Final; Will take place in September

The 2023 Prefontaine Classic has a new date and higher implications.

On Thursday, it was announced that the Pre Classic will be held on September 16-17, and that the meet will also serve as the Wanda Diamond League Final. The Final, which historically has been held in Zurich or Brussels, will rotate among the 14 host cities in order to give them the opportunity to hold the championship event.

“Save the dates,” The official account said on instagram. “The Prefontaine Classic is set to take place September 16–17, 2023 at Hayward Field at the University of Oregon. The 48th edition of the meet will host the Wanda Diamond League Final, where the world’s best athletes will be crowned champions of the professional circuit in the United States for the first time.”

Hayward Field has not had its shortage of high-end track meets as of late. The historic venue was the site for last season’s World Championships, Pre Classic, NCAA Championships and USATF Outdoor Championships.

The historic venue underwent a $270 million dollar renovation in 2018 that not only added seating, but state-of-the-art fixtures that set the track and field venue apart from other venues in the world.

Tickets will go on sale in early 2023.

I’m a sports journalist based in Florida and I’ve covered a couple of different sports so far early on in my career, but I love the sport of track and field and the art of running. Everyone has a story and everyone has a story worth telling. My prayer is that the stories of the great athletes of this sport are told, and that the sport grows to new creative heights, so that the sport gets the respect it deserves.
