Reigning Olympic champion Marcell Jacobs set to return to the track in February

After battling injuries throughout the year last season, the reigning Olympic 100m champion is healthy and is set to make his return to the track next month.

Marcell Jacobs announced earlier this week that he would be taking part in the Orlen Cup in Lodz, Poland early next month.

“You heard right! After a long winter preparation, I will finally make my debut on February 4th at the Orlen Cup in Lodz,” Jacobs said on Twitter. “I can’t wait to get on the track.”

Jacobs, who represents Italy, is one of the best sprinters in the world in the Indoor and Outdoor ranks. In 2021, he won the Indoor World Championship in the 60m with a new personal best of 6.47.

He followed that up with a spectacular performance at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, where his 9.80 second time not only was enough to win the Olympic gold medal in the 100m, but it was a personal best for him as well.

Jacobs participated in the World Championships in Oregon last summer, but withdrew from the 100m final due to injury. Prior to focusing on the sprints, Jacobs competed in the long jump. His personal best in the event is 7.95 meters.

He will face the veteran American runner Mike Rodgers, as well as Joris van Gool of the Netherlands. The meet is set to take place on February 4.

I’m a sports journalist based in Florida and I’ve covered a couple of different sports so far early on in my career, but I love the sport of track and field and the art of running. Everyone has a story and everyone has a story worth telling. My prayer is that the stories of the great athletes of this sport are told, and that the sport grows to new creative heights, so that the sport gets the respect it deserves.
