Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce made her season’s debut in the women’s 100m on Thursday. It only took her 10 seconds to show why she’s one of the best to ever do it in the event, and why she’s a serious contender to defend her world championship title from last year in Budapest next month.
At the Spitzen Leichtathletik meet in Lucerne on Thursday, she ran 10.82 in her season opener in the event. Her time was the fourth fastest time in the world this year in the women’s 100m.
“I’m satisfied to set a meeting record in my first 100m race of the season,” she told World Athletics after the meet. “It was a new situation for me to come back from injury and start the season this late.”
Two days before, Steven Gardiner put on a show at the Gyulai Istvan Memorial in Szekesfehervar in the men’s 400m. He ran 43.74, which gave him the win as well as the world lead in the event.
Gardiner won the gold medal in the 400m in 2019 at the World Championships in Doha, where he also ran his lifetime best in the event (43.48). His time on Tuesday was the second fastest time of his career.
