2024 is only days away, which means that 2024 indoor and outdoor track and field season, as well as the road-racing scene will be here before we know it. While there’s great excitement and anticipation for what next year and next season will bring, we can’t forget the great things that took place in 2023.
Many athletes around the sport showed up and showed out throughout the year and made a name for themselves with their remarkable performances. Here’s a couple of names that had incredible seasons on the track, and in the field as well.
Noah Lyles – what more can you say about the incredibly talented sprinter. In addition to showing once again why he’s currently the best in the business when it comes to the men’s 200m, he tried his hand at the men’s 100m. His investment paid off, as he made the World Championship team, and then won the world championship in the event. He then took home two more gold medals – one in the men’s 200m, and one in the men’s 4x100m relay. He finished with the fastest time of the season in the men’s 200m with his time of 19.47 that he ran at the London Diamond League meet.
Sifan Hassan has been must-see TV when she steps on the track or when she takes to the roads to compete in the women’s marathon. She competed in multiple events at the World Championships in Budapest and finished with a bronze medal in the women’s 1500m. She made her marathon debut earlier in the year at the London Marathon. Her debut was a success, as she ran 2:18.33 to win the race. After the World Championships in Budapest, she won the Chicago Marathon with a time of 2:13.44, which is the second fastest time in women’s marathon history.
Champions show up when it’s time, and that’s exactly what Chase Ealey did this season. After finishing fourth at the USATF Outdoor Championships in Eugene last summer, she bounced back in a major way, winning her last three meets, with two of the three meets she won being championships meets. She took home the gold medal at the World Championships in Budapest, and then turned around a few weeks later and won the Diamond League title in the women’s shot put in Eugene.
