2023 was a wonderful year for fans who witnessed some of the world’s best athletes on the track, in the field and on the roads. Now, the athletes who made a big impact are getting the honors and recognition from a remarkable season.

On Monday, World Athletics announced the winners for the Male and Female Athletes of the Year. According to the press release, due to the difficulty in making a decision of who would win the respective awards, the Athlete of the Year awards were divided into three categories based on the athletes who were nominated.

“The depth of talent and the outstanding performances in our sport this year more than justify the expansion of the World Athletics Awards to recognise the accomplishments by these six athletes across a range of disciplines,” World Athletics President Sebastian Coe said in the official press release.

I congratulate our award winners and all of the athletes nominated for these honours.”

The 2023 World Athletics Athletes of the Year are:

  • Women’s track: Faith Kipyegon
  • Women’s field: Yulimar Rojas
  • Women’s out of stadium: Tigist Assefa
  • Men’s track: Noah Lyles
  • Men’s field: Mondo Duplantis
  • Men’s out of stadium: Kelvin Kiptum

I’m a sports journalist based in Florida and I’ve covered a couple of different sports so far early on in my career, but I love the sport of track and field and the art of running. Everyone has a story and everyone has a story worth telling. My prayer is that the stories of the great athletes of this sport are told, and that the sport grows to new creative heights, so that the sport gets the respect it deserves.
