We’re inching closer to the month of December, which means that we’re getting closer and closer to finding out the 2023 World Athletes of the Year.
Last month, World Athletics announced the 11 athletes who were nominated for the prestigious award. On Monday, World Athletics announced the five finalists for the Women’s World Athlete of the Year award.
Here are the finalists for the Women’s World Athlete of the Year award (names listed in alphabetical order and in the order listed by World Athletics):
- Tigist Assefa (marathon)
- Femke Bol (400m hurdles/400m)
- Shericka Jackson (100m, 200m)
- Faith Kipyegon (mile, 1500m, 5k)
- Yulimar Rojas (triple jump)
Facts about the nominees:
- Three of the nominees have broken world records in their respective events (Assefa, Kipyegon, Bol)
- Four of the athletes have won world championships this season (Bol, Kipyegon, Rojas, Jackson)
- Three of the nominated athletes took home Diamond League titles this past season (Bol, Jackson, Rojas)
According to World Athletics, voting closed on October 28, and there was a three-way voting process that determined the finalists for the award. The winner of the Women’s World Athlete of the Year award will be announced on Dec. 11.
