In the 400 meter semi-finals at the Olympic Trials, 16-year-old Quincy Wilson bettered the U18 world record he had set just days prior.
Wilson had run a then U18 world record time of 44.66 in the preliminary heats on Friday, and in his semi-final round on Sunday, he pushed that record lower to 44.59 seconds with an impressive third place finish to qualify on time for the final.
In a race that had Olympic and World Championship medalists Bryce Deadmon and Vernon Norwood finishing 1-2 to achieve the automatic qualifier for the final, Wilson was in fifth position coming through turn four, and absolutely ate up the final straightaway, passing collegians Judson Lincoln and Jenoah Mckiver to secure third place with the new world record time.
The final for the 400 meters take place on Monday at 9:59pm ET. Should he finish in the top-3 in the Final, already having run the Olympic Standard, Wilson will earn a spot on Team USA for Paris. There is significant likelihood that he could earn a bid as part of the 400 meter relay pool in the absence of a top-3 finish.
