Yared Nuguse Sets Three Records in Mile Win at Penn Relays

On Athletics Club’s Yared Nuguse has been nearly unstoppable this year. Add to that a performance at the Penn Relays that has not been seen in 50 years.

When it was announced two weeks ago that OAC teammates Nuguse and Olli Hoare were going to be toeing the line at the event, we knew the race was going to be can’t miss. In the Olympic Development (elite) men’s mile, Nuguse finished just ahead of Hoare, 3:51.06 to 3:51.28, with Empire Elite’s Eric Holt third in 3:51.46. Each of their times would be good enough for the Penn Relays mile record, though it is Nuguse’s which will be written into the top of the record books.

In addition to the Penn Relays mile record, Yared also secured the Franklin Field mile record AND the Pennsylvania state record. This performance puts him ahead of some legendary names who held those records until yesterday (courtesy of Bring Back the Mile):

  • Penn record – 3:53.2 (Tony Waldrop, 1974)
  • Franklin Field record – 3:52.88 (Eamonn Coghlan, 1979)
  • Pennsylvania State record – 3:52.26 (Steve Scott, 1981)

These records just add to Nuguse’s incredible run the past few seasons. During the 2023 season he set an American Record in the 1500m (3:29.02), mile (3:43.97), and 3000m (7:28.24i).
