Looking Back with Rich Kenah at the 1992 NCAA Championship

Did you know that Rich Kenah, Atlanta Track Club CEO and Georgetown alum, was one hell of a runner in his day? Thirty years ago he squeezed out a close win in the NCAA Indoor 800m over Scott Peters of Florida.

Rich went on to a highly successful pro running career, which including earning medals in two World Championship meets and landing an Olympic team berth in 2000.

When asked to share some of his NCAA championships memories, Kenah said, “I attended the NCAA’s this past weekend in Birmingham. As I entered the venue, the smell of the Mondo track immediately brought me back 30 years to the NCAA Championships in Indianapolis. As my wife and I sat on the backstretch enjoying the action with our high school aged twins (who chose basketball over track), we saw lots of old friends and former competitors who are now paying it forward as coaches of this generation’s NCAA standouts. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t pay specific attention to the men’s 800m. And, of course, it didn’t disappoint. The depth and quality of 800m men and women in this country is striking and exponentially better than it was in 1992 when Scott Peters from the University of Florida and I leaned at the tape.”

Another notable name in the ‘92 NCAA results is Allen Johnson, who dominated the the hurdles event. Allen went on to be a 4 time World Champion and a 1996 Olympic Gold medalist.
