Hiltz and Kessler impress with 1500/3000 doubles at USAs

At this weekend’s USATF Indoor Championships, Hobbs Kessler and Nikki Hiltz brought home a pair of medals each in the 1500m and 3000m. Kessler secured the men’s 1500m title with a time of 3:38.82, narrowly edging out Sam Prakel and Luke Houser. The day prior, he leapt at the finish line to finish in 7:38.00, two hundredths of a second ahead of Dylan Jacobs. Hiltz achieved a remarkable double victory, winning both the women’s 1500m in 4:05.76 and the 3000m in 8:48.28, each also with tight finishes, ahead of Sinclaire Johnson and Shelby Houlihan, respectively. Notably, Hiltz’s win in the 1500m marked their fifth consecutive US title in the event, spanning both indoor and outdoor championships. A full listing of 2025 USATF Indoor champions is provided below.

Josh Hoey lowers own American record in 800m

Josh Hoey set a new American indoor record in the 800m with a time of 1:43.24 on the final day of the USATF Indoor Championships, surpassing his previous record of 1:43.90 set earlier in February. This achievement not only secured his first national title but also positioned him as the second-fastest indoor 800m runner globally, trailing only Wilson Kipketer’s 1997 world record of 1:42.67. Hoey led the race from the start, passing the 400m mark in 50.36 seconds and maintaining his lead to finish ahead of Brandon Miller, who clocked a personal best of 1:44.26, and Wes Ferguson, who finished in 1:44.92.

The DMR record book continues to be rewritten

The records for the Distance Medley Relay (DMR) have once again been lowered. On Friday night, the men from the University of Virginia set a new NCAA record with a time of 9:14.19. The team comprised Wes Porter (1200m in 2:50.51), Alex Sherman (400m in 46.26), Conor Murphy (800m in 1:47.33), and Gary Martin (1600m in 3:50.09). This performance surpassed the previous collegiate record of 9:16.40 set by Oklahoma State in 2023. Notably, while Washington ran a 9:14.10 DMR earlier in the season, it was on an oversized track, making Virginia’s time the fastest on a regulation 200-meter track.

Also on Friday at the Terrier DMR Challenge, the women from the University of Oregon set a new collegiate indoor record with a time of 10:42.05. The team consisted of Julia Nielsen (1200m in 3:18.06), Moriah Oliveira (400m in 52.46), Mia Barnett (800m in 2:05.07), and Silan Ayyildiz (1600m in 4:26.46). This performance surpassed the previous record of 10:43.39 set by the University of Washington in 2024.

WADA relents in lawsuit against USADA

WADA has withdrawn its defamation lawsuit against USADA over the 2021 dispute regarding Chinese swimmers testing positive for trimetazidine, following its decision to clear the athletes based on contamination findings. USADA chief Travis Tygart denounced the legal action as a cover-up and hailed its dismissal as vindication, while WADA maintained that the lawsuit would have succeeded but was dropped to move forward collaboratively. Despite the legal resolution, tensions persist between the two agencies, with ongoing disputes over compliance reviews, Olympic hosting conditions, and additional ethics cases.

John Carlos’s 1968 podium jacket sells for $500,000+

John Carlos’s iconic U.S. team jacket from the 1968 Olympics, worn during his famous Black Power salute on the podium, sold at auction for $500,200. The jacket, which he traded to a Senegalese runner before departing those Games, was returned to Carlos over 50 years later, which led to him putting it up for auction, with proceeds benefiting the family who kept it in such great condition all these years.
