World Athletics reviewing female competition guidelines
World Athletics (WA) is reviewing its female eligibility regulations, focusing on athletes with differences in sex development (DSD) and transgender athletes. Recommendations include a mandatory test, via cheek swab, to detect the SRY gene, which is typically only seen in males, and to measure testosterone levels when required. A stakeholder consultation is currently underway. WA head Sebastian Coe stated that such clear lines on biological sex should only be drawn for elite competition, and that, “the sport as a whole, for example at the non-elite and recreational levels, has a place for everyone.”
European road 5k record for Diane van Es
Van Es (Netherlands) set a new European women’s road 5k record at the Monaco Run, finishing in 14:39. She placed second behind Ethiopia’s Likina Amebaw, who won in 14:33. Van Es’s time surpassed the previous European record of 14:44, set by Sifan Hassan in 2019.
John Carlos’s 1968 Olympic Team USA jacket returned 50 years later
In 1968, after his iconic raised-fist on the podium at the Mexico City Olympics, John Carlos traded his Team USA track jacket with a Senegalese runner for, “a beautiful outfit.” Now decades later, following the runner’s passing, his nephew returned the jacket to Carlos, having preserved it meticulously. Carlos, deeply moved by the gesture, has decided to auction the jacket, with proceeds benefiting the family that safeguarded it for over 50 years. The current bid is $28,000.
Eagles’ Super Bowl pick-sixer Cooper DeJean was prep track standout
In Sunday’s Super Bowl, cornerback Cooper DeJean had his first NFL interception and returned it for a touchdown to give the Eagles a 17 point lead. As a high school senior, he ran the fastest 100 meters in the state of Iowa that year (10.71 seconds), in addition to setting a then sixth-best all-time long jump (24’ 2”) in state history.
Jamie Nieto to host virtual high jump clinic
Two-time Olympian Jamie Nieto will be hosting a virtual high jump clinic on March 23. The two-hour session, which will take place on Zoom, will discuss training strategies, drills, and provide live feedback to attendees. More information and registration is available on Nieto’s website.
