After a tremendous season at Coastal Carolina, star sprinter Melissa Jefferson was named the Sun Belt Conference Female Athlete of the Year.

Jefferson had a tremendous season as a member of the Coastal Carolina Chanticleer’s track and field team. She took home a national title in the women’s 60m at the NCAA Indoors and reached the women’s 100m final.

Her string of great performances didn’t stop after her collegiate season. She won the 2022 USATF Outdoor title in the women’s 100m. She followed that feat by making the finals in the aforementioned event at the World Championships just a few weeks later. She also was a part of the women’s 4×100 relay team that took home a gold medal.

She owns school records in the 60m (7.09), 100m (10.88), 200m (22.46) and she was a member of the 4x100m relay team that broke the school record (43.23.)

Jefferson now runs professionally for Nike.

I’m a sports journalist based in Florida and I’ve covered a couple of different sports so far early on in my career, but I love the sport of track and field and the art of running. Everyone has a story and everyone has a story worth telling. My prayer is that the stories of the great athletes of this sport are told, and that the sport grows to new creative heights, so that the sport gets the respect it deserves.
