World Champion Jake Wightman is set to briefly embark on a new challenge in the 2023 Indoor season.

Recently, it was announced that the talented 28-year-old would race in the 2000m event at the Birmingham World Indoor Tour Final in February.

“When I was offered the chance to run indoors over 2000m in Birmingham next February, I couldn’t resist,” Wightman said to World Athletics. “I love testing myself over-distance and the chance to go for a fast time on that track isn’t something you get to do every day.

“The Birmingham crowd have always been amazing for me and the reception I got at the Commonwealth Games this summer after winning the World Championships was pretty memorable. If they can make half that noise for me in February, I’ll be well on my way to a fast time.”

Wightman is hoping to replicate what was a fantastic season for him on the track. He took home the gold medal at the World Championships in Oregon last summer in the 1500m. He followed up that performance by winning the silver medal in the 800m at the European Championships, and then a bronze medal in the 1500m in the Commonwealth Games.

He finished his remarkable season by winning the 5th Avenue Mile.

I’m a sports journalist based in Florida and I’ve covered a couple of different sports so far early on in my career, but I love the sport of track and field and the art of running. Everyone has a story and everyone has a story worth telling. My prayer is that the stories of the great athletes of this sport are told, and that the sport grows to new creative heights, so that the sport gets the respect it deserves.
