World Athletics announces nominees for Women’s World Athlete of the Year

The end of the calendar year is near, which means that the voting process for the World Athletics Athletes of the Year award has officially kicked off. 

On Wednesday, World Athletics announced the 11 women that have been nominated for the 2023 Women’s World Athlete of the Year award. The winner of the award will be announced at the World Athletics Awards that will be held in December.

Here are the 11 female athletes who have been nominated for the Women’s World Athletics Athlete of the Year award (names listed in alphabetical order and in the order listed by World Athletics):

  • Tigist Assefa (marathon)
  • Femke Bol (400m hurdles/400m)
  • Shericka Jackson (100m, 200m)
  • Faith Kipyegon (mile, 1500m, 5k)
  • Haruka Kitaguchi (javelin)
  • Yaroslava Mahuchikh (high jump)
  • Maria Perez (race walk)
  • Gudaf Tsegay (5k/10k)
  • Sha’Carri Richardson (100m/200m)
  • Yulimar Rojas (triple jump)
  • Winfed Yavi (3000m steeplechase)

Additional facts about the nominees:

  • 10 of the 11 athletes that are nominated for the award won the world championship title in their respective events.
  • Four of the athletes that are nominated have broken the world record in their events.
  • 8 of the 11 athletes that are nominated won the Diamond League title this past season.

Per World Athletics, “Fans can vote online via the World Athletics social media platforms. Individual graphics for each nominee will be posted on Facebook, X, Instagram and YouTube this week; a ‘like’ on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube or a retweet on X will count as one vote.”

Voting closes at midnight on October 28, and at the conclusion of the voting process, five women finalists will be announced on November 13-14 with the winner being revealed on December 11.
