John Reniewicki Sets Drake Relays 1500m Record

John Reniewicki of Under Armour Mission Run Baltimore Distance had himself a week at the Drake Relays.

First taking to the streets of Des Moines in the Grand Blue Mile / USATF Road Mile Championships on Tuesday, he finished in runner-up position with a time of 3:58.48 just behind Vince Ciattei. The fireworks continued for Reniewicki as he took to the track on Saturday.

In the elite men’s field for the 1500m (which at Drake is a World Athletics Continental Tour event), John once again faced off with Ciattei, though this time Reniewicki would come out the victor, taking down a 40 year old Relays record. His winning time of 3:36.44 was nearly two seconds faster than the previous best of 3:38.27 held by Steve Scott, set in 1984. This was one of two records of Scott’s that were topped yesterday, as Yared Nuguse took the Pennsylvania state mile record time at the Penn Relays.

Earlier this year, Reniewicki was part of Team USA at the World Cross Country Championships in Belgrade where he ran with the 8th place finishing mixed relay team. This came after a strong indoor season that included a mile personal best time of 3:51.72 (six seconds faster than his previous best).
