Track Talk with Dominique Smith: Recapping and previewing a busy track and field weekend

Last weekend was filled with impressive track and field performances across the sport on every level.

Julliette Whittaker broke the high school 800 meter record in New York with an incredible time of 1:59.80. In Jamaica, young phenom Oblique Seville ran the second fastest time in the world so far this season in the men’s 100m, with a time of 9.86. That was the fastest time by any Jamaican since 2016 in the event.

Sha’Carri Richardson made her 100m season debut in Jacksonville, where she and the other athletes were met with rainy and stormy conditions. After initially running 11.37 in heat 5 of the women’s 100m, she then came back and lowered her time to 11.27, which gave her the win.

The impressive performances that took place this past weekend and in some respect, the entire season, leads to what should be must-see-TV at the Nike Prefontaine Classic in Eugene this weekend.

Check out this week’s edition of Track Talk for a recap of all these things and more.

I’m a sports journalist based in Florida and I’ve covered a couple of different sports so far early on in my career, but I love the sport of track and field and the art of running. Everyone has a story and everyone has a story worth telling. My prayer is that the stories of the great athletes of this sport are told, and that the sport grows to new creative heights, so that the sport gets the respect it deserves.
