After phenomenal individual seasons, Femke Bol, Mondo Duplantis and Jakob Ingebrigtsen earned European athlete of the year honors at the Golden Tracks awards ceremony.

The annual awards ceremony took place in Tallinn, Estonia last Saturday evening. Duplantis and Ingebrigtsen split the male European athlete of the year award, while Bol won the award outright.

The young athletes did incredible things during the track and field season. Bol took home eight medals in total; three at the World Championships (mixed 4x400m, 400m hurdles, 4x400m),  three at the European Championships (400m, 400m hurdles, 4x400m) and two at the World Athletics Indoor Championships (400m, 4x400m.)

Duplantis continued his dominance this season. He broke his world record in the pole vault twice (6.21, 6.22) and took home the titles World Athletics Indoor Championships, the outdoor World Championships and the European Championships.

Ingebrigtsen started the season strong, and he finished the season strong. He broke the indoor world record in the 1500 with his time of 3:30.60 and then took home a gold medal in the 5000m at the World Championships this past summer. He also medaled in the 1500m, while also winning gold medals in the 5000m and in the 1500m at the European Championships.

I’m a sports journalist based in Florida and I’ve covered a couple of different sports so far early on in my career, but I love the sport of track and field and the art of running. Everyone has a story and everyone has a story worth telling. My prayer is that the stories of the great athletes of this sport are told, and that the sport grows to new creative heights, so that the sport gets the respect it deserves.
