The outdoor track and field season is heating up as we cruise into the second weekend of May. The American Track League continues their schedule with a meet in Puerto Rico while the Diamond League meets in Doha. Big time races also on the slate with the River Gate Run serving as the USA Championship for 25k and the World 10k taking place in India. Finally, conference weekend is kicking off this weekend in the NCAA, with powerhouse programs going head-to-head for bragging rights.

American Track League – Puerto Rico Athletics Classic
A special Thursday evening edition of the American Track League highlights the return of Christian Taylor to the Triple Jump following a setback from injury in addition to Sandi Morris’s outdoor season opener. Taylor is coming back into form following an Achilles injury that took him out of Tokyo, and Morris is coming into the outdoor season off a successful indoor campaign that saw gold medals at both USAs and Worlds. The Puerto Rico will be aired on ESPN2 starting at 6pm ET / 3PM PT on May 12.

Big time performances were seen across every event, including a sub-10 in the 100m for Trayvon Bromell, finishing atop the podium with a 9.92. Ryan Crouser makes good on his quest to dwarf every pit he encounters by throwing nearly two meters farther than his next closest competitor in the shot put, taking the event with a 22.75m throw. Sandi Morris continued her dominant 2022 season by opening the outdoor campaign with a 4.72m jump and the W in the pole vault competition. Donald Scott impressed with a 16.88m mark in the triple jump, which also saw the return of Christian Taylor in his first competition since an Achilles injury sidelined him in 2021. Olympic Gold Medalist Elaine Thompson-Herah charged to the only sub-11 100m of the night, earning the win with a 10.93 ahead of a final field that also included Cambrea Sturgis. In a tight finish in the 100mH, Alaysha Johnson and Jasmine Camacho-Quinn go 1-2, only separated at the finish line by 0.02 second (12.50 to 12.52).

Diamond League – Doha Meeting
The Diamond League returns to Doha, Qatar on May 13 for their inaugural outdoor event of the season. Highlights include:
- 200m matchup between Noah Lyles, Fred Kerley, and Andre de Grasse
- The always incredible Shaune Miller-Uibo in the 400m
- Erik Sowinski doing the pacing in a 1500m field that includes Timothy Cheruiyot and Abel Kipsang
- Raven Saunders and Jessica Ramsey squaring off in the Shot Put
The meet will be aired on NBC’s premium subscription service Peacock from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. ET on Friday.
River Bank Run – USA 25k Championships
This year represents the 45th running of the River Bank Run, which has also serviced as the USA 25k Championship since 1995. The race will welcome over 10,000 participants and command an impressive elite field. Last week’s Half Marathon Championship 1-2 men’s finishers Leonard Korir and Futsum Zienasellasie are listed as starters, along with notables Parker Stinson and Tyler Jermann. On the women’s side, expect to see Kiera D’Amato and Dakota Lindwurm in an impressive field that also includes NAZ Elite’s Lauren Paquette and Aliphine Tuliamuk racing down the streets of Grand Rapids. TCS World 10k Bengaluru
The World 10k Bengaluru is taking place in India for the 14th year on Sunday, May 15, and it is playing host to a veritable who’s who of international road racing. Per the event’s website, we will see “Muktar Edris, Kibiwott Kandie and Tadese Worku in the men’s race; Hellen Obiri, Irene Cheptai and Joyce Tele in the women’s race – include Kenya’s Rio 2016 Olympic Games 10,000m silver medallist Paul Tanui and his compatriot Nicolas Kipkorir Kimeli, who was fourth in the 5000m at the Olympic Games in Tokyo last summer.”
